Applied Research Project

Week 1: Topic Selection

Investigate this week to determine the topic you want to research for your course project. Ways to investigate topics include:

  • Look at the Syllabus... there are lots of topics we will be covering in this course. Do any of them sound really interesting to you?
  • Browse through the chapters in the textbook, even the ones not used in the course.
  • Is there some topic you need to know more about for an upcoming project you are on, or would like to work on? Or is there an issue you'd like to research to find possible solutions?
  • Case studies work well if you have 1st hand knowledge.
  • Or you could research and analyze a public data management issue experienced by a large company that made the news.

While the Course Project Topic Select assignment is not graded, please spend time looking at different areas and narrowing down your topic during Week 1. At the end of Week 2 you will be required to submit an abstract of your research project which is worth 20 points. You’ll want to spend Week 2 writing your abstract to identify your project subject selection and project scope definition. You Do Not want to spend Week 2 scrambling to come up with a topic. Do it in Week 1!
